The post procedure skin care and also relates to defining the number of peeling procedures one needs to undergo for the best results. Face Skin Care after Superficial peels With an AHA peel, the redness, flaking and dryness that results after the treatment is just temporary and it will not prevent you from working or engaging in your normal activities. A fresher and improved skin texture will result with continued AHA treatments. It is important in the case of superficial peeling to keep the skin moist by the application of petrolatum based products during the first 10 days after resurfacing. Dry skin cleanser moisturizer treatment is of great importance in this regard. Protecting your skin from the sun is the most significant post peel face skin care one has to take even after the mild acid peels. Ask your doctor to recommend a sunblock with adequate UVA and UVB protection that you can use every day. Improvements from AHA peels may be very subtle at first. But your face is sure to have a healthier glow and enhanced appearance. With continued treatments, you will notice a general improvement in the texture of your skin. Face Skin Care after Medium Peels A full-face TCA peel usually takes no more than 15 minutes. Two or more TCA peels may be needed to obtain the desired result, and those may be spaced out over several months. Mild TCA peels may be repeated as often as every month. A TCA peel may also cause significant swelling, depending on the strength of the peel used. With a TCA peel, the moderate discomfort and mild swelling you may experience will subside within the first week. In about a week to ten days, your new skin will be apparent and you should be healed sufficiently to return to your normal activities. It is best to avoid sun exposure unless you are adequately protected. The results of a TCA peel are usually not as long-lasting as those of phenol peel. However, your skin will be noticeably smoother and fresher-looking enough to boost your confidence. Face Skin Care after Deep Phenol Peels A full-face phenol peel generally takes one or two hours to perform, while a phenol peel to a smaller facial region (perhaps the skin above the upper lip) may take only 10 or 15 minutes. A single treatment usually suffices. Intensive post-peel face skin care is required with the phenol deep peels. Just after the application the cosmetic surgeon will coat the treated area with petroleum jelly or a waterproof adhesive tape. However, no covering is required with lighter peels. It is very common to experience some temporary flaking or scaling, redness and dryness of the skin. After the skin adjusts to treatment, these conditions start gradually disappearing. It is important for you to follow your doctor's instructions for your face skin care after the procedure; he/she may prescribe a mild pain medication to relieve any tingling or throbbing you may feel. Removal of tapes Your face may become quite swollen even causing your eyes to swell and shut temporarily. You will need someone to help care for you for a day or two. You may also be limited to a liquid diet and advised not to talk very much during the first few days of recovery. If tape was used to cover your face, it will be removed after a day or two. A crust or scab will form on the treated area. It is important to keep the wounds moist with the application of silicone gel sheets or similar. This healing schedule with the dry skin moisturizer treatment is followed after a deep skin resurfacing procedure for at least 5 days after the occlusive dressing is removed. Avoiding Infections Besides the post-peeling conditioning skin care, equally important is the facial skin care to avoid infection. Take enough skin care to allow healing of the wounds as rapidly as possible to avoid contamination with bacteria such as Pseudomonas, yeasts such as Candida, or viruses such as herpes. The use of prophylactic antimicrobials is an effective solution. If any microbes get the chance to penetrate deeper into the skin it can result in a third degree wound that may eventually result in scarring. With a phenol peel, new skin will begin to form in about seven to ten days. Your face will be very red at first, gradually fading to a pinkish color over the following weeks to months. Using a sub block During this time, it is especially important that you use a sunblock or blotchy, irregular skin coloring may result. If the individual receiving a deep peel has a darker complexion or blotchy pigmentation, a bleaching cream is added to the skin care regiment between day 15 and 20 after the surgery. Because it is during this time that skin is able to tolerate the application of a cream-based product. About two weeks after the treatment, you may return to work and resume some of your normal activities. Your skin will be healed enough for you to wear makeup. You can follow your plastic surgeon's instructions for using the camouflage cosmetics to hide the temporary scars until the skin heels completely and you have the new look you were so eagerly waiting for. Potential complications and the care A kind of acneiform eruption is a common complication that can occur. There can be many factors responsible for this. Exacerbation of previously existing acne or overgreasing of newly formed skin is thought to be the most common reasons. Short-term systemic antibiotics together with discontinuation of any oily preparations will usually provide a satisfactory solution. Prophylactic antimicrobials are used for 10 days following a deep phenol peel to help avoid these complications. Delayed healing and persistent redness continuing for several months are important alarming signs of forthcoming scarring. Topical antibiotics and potent steroid preparations should be introduced as soon as this diagnosis is made. Results The results that you obtain after the treatment are wonderful and dramatic, enough to forget the pain and strict post operative care that you had to undergo! The peel serves to boost your self-esteem - it will produce fewer fine wrinkles, fewer blemishes and more even-toned skin. Moreover the results are long-lasting as compared to other peeling agents and effective enough to keep you smiling for a considerable time to come! Best luck for the treatment, just take good care of yourself before and after the deep peeling procedure and you will have that youthful look return to you!
