Microdermabrasion Treatment Costs

Microdermabrasion is the second most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure according to the estimates of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

The number of patients undergoing microdermabrasion treatment grew by 13% between 2001 and 2002 and more so in the last few years. It is estimated that around 858,867 procedures of microdermabrasion were conducted in North America in 2004 with an average cost of $173.

A single microdermabrasion treatment procedure is within the reach of most individuals. A single procedure can cost anywhere between $75 - $200, depending upon the machine used and the surgeon or technician who performs the procedure.

The cost also varies with geographical area and the proce may be significantly different depending on the state or country where you receive the treatment. Sometimes a spa or salon machine may use the same model a dermatologist uses in his clinic. But the cost may differ since there are other factors which need to be considered like the safety of the procedures to avoid the after hazards of the treatment. If you are armed with knowledge, your chances of being taken advantage of by the clinics are lessened. It is also important for you to make sure that the clinic offers you complete safety for the cost it charges you.

You can manage to get a microdermabrasion treatment around $75 or less, but the safety of the procedure may be in doubt. In inexperienced operator may charge you less, but may give you a poor quality result or may fail to provide proper after care. The national average for the procedure started with $135 in 2001 reaching to $175 in 2003/2004.

The national average figure for the microdermabrasion does not include any lotions or skin care products that are required after the procedure, but since microdermabrasion does not require surgical facility or anesthesia costs, it is a pretty good average which is affordable to all.

An average machine is able to give you the penetration and the benefits you need. Treatment of acne scars normally require a higher level of penetration, but beware, medical grade machines on their high levels can rip right through your skin causing damage to your skin. As such, an experienced operator is needed to handle these more high powered machines correctly and to provide the appropriate microdermabrasion for acne scars. It is better to discuss the safety issues along with cost when you first see your cosmetic surgeon or physician.

Most doctors and aestheticians recommend a "series" of procedures with microdermabrasion machines. A series consists of, on average, 4-6 treatments at 7- 10 day intervals.

As described elsewhere on this web site, you should wait at least 10 days for your skin to heal properly between procedures or you will be doing your skin more harm than good. Some dermatologists consider an aggressive course with treatments every 5 days more effective, but this approach is rejected as unacceptable by others. Some doctors or aestheticians will offer a package of treatments starting at $700 for 4-6 treatments. But take care to have enough recuperation gaps between the procedures.

Microdermabrasion has long being promoted as a lunch time procedure, for ease of its operation, and no down time requirement. There are no strict precautions that one needs to take after the procedure, but good hygienic skin care is a good idea. The procedure is fast gaining popularity as an individual procedure or in combination with chemical peels. It is now included as a routine procedure along with the superficial and medium depth peels for a complete skin rejuvenation program

A professional dermabrasion treatment, costs around $866 whereas a professional microdermabrasion costs in the range of $125 - $180 for a single treatment with variations from place to place and clinics to clinics. However, dermabrasion does have advantages for people with more severe skin aging or deeper scars and blemishes. Microdermabrasion is less effective at removing deep seated scars and wrinkles.
